Today marks the 12th anniversary of the Croatian Arm forces' offensive in Western Slavonia known as Operation Flash (Bljesak).

Operation Flash 12th anniversary

According to the of Croatian Helsinki Committee for Human Rights’ report published on July 24, 2003, Croatian Army members killed 83 Serb civilians.

The other source, namely the Documentation and information center Veritas, said that as many as 283 Western Slavonia Serbs were either killed or went missing during the Operation.

One day following the onset of the Flash, Republic of Srpska Krajina President Milan Martić ordered the racketeering of Zagreb which lasted for two days. The Hague Tribunal accused Martić of the crimes that took place in the Krajina, western Bosnia and Zagreb and his trial began in 2003.
The Hague Prosecution had been preparing the Operation Flash-related war crimes indictment against then Croatian President Franjo Tuđman who died in 1999.

Hague Prosecutors interrogated several Croatian Amy officers of the involvement in the Flash, including retired General Mladen Markač

The Hague brought charges against Markač in March 2004, accusing him of with crimes against humanity and violation of laws and customs of war. He was released from custody in December 2004 pending trial.
