Schwarz-Schilling writes to Tadić on Hague

The same day, Tadić's office issued a reply criticizing the note, but stressing that Tadić is nevertheless prepared to meet with Schwarz-Schilling.

It added that Serbia "has done a great deal" in that respect in the last six years, although it is nevertheless aware of its outstanding obligations en route to full cooperation.

"Even though the high representative does not have the authority to demand reports from institutions of another country, President Tadić indicates his willingness to receive Mr. Schwarz-Schilling in Belgrade and discuss issues from our jurisdictions and information on the cooperation of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia with the Hague tribunal," the statement added.

On April 26, Ljiljana Radetić, spokeswoman for the Banjaluka branch of the Office of the High Representative, said that Schwarz-Schilling's letter attempted to direct Tadić's attention to the debate in Bosnia created by the ruling of the International Court of Justice to Bosnia's genocide lawsuit against Serbia.

She went on to say that in its ruling, the court said that Serbia violated its obligations stemming from the international genocide prevention conventions in regard to the genocide that was committed in Srebrenica in 1995.

"He emphasized that the court's opinion is that Serbia has to take immediate steps towards full cooperation with the Hague tribunal," Radetic said.

She added that the high representative also stressed that he was "encouraged by recent statements made by Tadić on Serbia's cooperation with the Hague tribunal."

The statement from Tadić's office also noted that Tadić has consistently advocated finishing up the job of cooperation with the ICTY since voted into office and that immediately after the ICJ ruling, he called for the arrest of the remaining individuals wanted by the ICTY for war crimes and urged Parliament to issue a declaration on Srebrenica.
