EU Troika to “convince” Lavrov

“The EU believes the plan would be the best way to stabilize the region and set Serbia and Kosovo on a path towards European structures through peaceful progress and development,” Beta learned from its diplomatic sources in Brussels.

The same sources said that Brussels would “demonstrate to Lavrov the EU's determination to guarantee the rule of law in Kosovo via its mission set to supervise Kosovo in its initial stage.”

European officials reiterated that any delay of Kosovo’s status settlement would prove detrimental to all concerned sides, as it could “cause fresh tensions and even violence.”

However, Moscow insisted on Friday that the threats of violence were “mere blackmail.” Russia repeated it was “nonsensical to claim that NATO troops had resolve and power to prevent violence in Kosovo, and at the same time insist that violence would flare up if Kosovo fell short of independence.”

Beta continued quoting its International diplomatic sources in Brussels as saying that “the EU expects Lavrov to advocate for Moscow’s determined position that any kind of settlement for Kosovo must be approved by Serbia, with respect for its sovereignty.”

“Lavrov will likely insist on additional status negotiations and ask why Ahtisaari scaled its mediating role down to “technical talks” only, without focusing on the status issue, as he already incorporated the concept of supervised independence in his plan,” Beta quoted its sources as saying.

According to these estimates, Lavrov “will probably demand an explanation of the meaning of threats of unilateral recognition of Kosovo’s statehood if the independence plan failed to garner necessary support in the UN Security Council.”
