BELGRADE Archbishop Amfilohije on Monday appealed to Russia and China to veto a UN plan that would give independence to Kosovo. "I'm calling on Russia, as the biggest Christian country, but also on China, to use their power of veto in the U.N. Security Council to prevent a crime against the Serbian people," Amfilohije, a high ranking Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) dignitary said in a statement published by the state Tanjug news agency. Church leader appeals to Russia, China "Russia can significantly help the Serbs," said Amfilohije, whom the AP reports "is considered the hard-line spiritual leader" of the SPC. "The big powers, especially the United States, have to understand what Kosovo means to the Serbs," Amfilohije said. "The Serbs will never give up Kosovo." The Serbian Orthodox Church has its seat in Kosovo's town of Pec, as well as numerous medieval monasteries and churches in the province.

"Russia can significantly help the Serbs," said Amfilohije, whom the AP reports "is considered the hard-line spiritual leader" of the SPC.

"The Serbs will never give up Kosovo."

The Serbian Orthodox Church has its seat in Kosovo's town of Peć, as well as numerous medieval monasteries and churches in the province.
