Serbia on eve of EU anniversary

The Union expanded over its history and saw seven enlargements, each time embracing new member states that met the criteria needed to join the EU family. It now has 27 members.

Serbia and Bosnia are the only countries in the region that still haven’t concluded the Stabilization and Association Agreement as a necessary prelude to advance towards the EU membership.

Speaking at the round table “EU – five decades later”, Head of the European Commission Delegation to Serbia Josep Lloveras said hat “had Serbia evolved under different historic circumstances, it would have been in the European Union by now”.

“Despite its potential, Serbia lags behind other EU aspiring states. Had it not been for the turbulent 1990s and the series of misfortune events in its recent history, I dare say Serbia would have been an EU member,” Lloveras said.

He said that Serbia still had the chance to make up for lost time, adding that “Serbia was the only country that set its course toward the EU, but whose SAA talks had been deadlocked.”

“The situation is indeed frustrating and resembles a ship that lacks strength to set sail. Serbia should work on removing the remaining obstacles, use its resources, make up for lost time and claim its place in the European family,” Lloveras concluded.
