Polt warned that religious extremism had the capacity to destabilize the region, adding that the authorities needed to deal with the threat in a decisive manner.

“I welcome the authorities’ action that identified the persons and their intentions against the peace-loving citizens of this country, Muslims in particular,” Polt said, referring to the weekend Serbian police action in Sandžak that ended with the arrest of four Wahhabis suspected of planning terrorist attacks.

While touring the Belgrade mosque, recently reconstructed with the U.S. government donation, Polt said Christians and Muslims have lived “in peace and friendship”, making the radical Islam a threat to the two communities living side by side.

Belgrade mufti Hamdija Jusufspahić thanked Polt on behalf of the Muslim community in Serbia.

“We are very satisfied with all you do. You are welcome here and we wish you would feel at home. We are yours, and you are ours,” the mufti said, addressing the ambassador.

According to Islam experts, although not large in numbers, the radical Islamist Wahhabi sect, originating in Saudi Arabia, forms the backbone of many Islamic terror networks, including that of Al-Qaeda, prompting the United States to pay close attention to any sign of terrorist activity worldwide.
