“In the same time, Serbia’s approval ratings and credibility in the European Union hit its lowest ever since the 2000 democratic changes. However, it’s not too late to make a U-turn. The EU officials that met and spoke to Serbian political leaders in the past several weeks assumed a hard line stand regarding the terms under which Serbia may resume its EU integration process,” the daily’s source argued.

Explaining the EU’s hard line stance towards Serbia, the source revealed that "Brussels doesn’t want to make an impression that the EU cared more about Serbia than Serbia cared about the EU.”

“Serbia is set to meet very clear criteria so as to resume SAA talks. The talks should carry on within two or three weeks following the formation of the pro-European government in Serbia. The European Commission and Serbian government could finalize the talks and initial the Agreement at the beginning of summer, which could leave enough room to organize the signing of the Agreement by the end of 2007,” the EU official said.

The EU representatives that negotiate with Serbia on behalf of the Union based their optimism on the fact that Serbia was well prepared in comparison to other candidates or potential candidates, except Croatia, the daily concluded.
