Ahtisaari promotes Kosovo plan

“Some Security Council members are completely aware of the situation in Kosovo, some of them are at the same time members of the Contact Group and the EU, while others come from other parts of the world,” Ahtisaari’s spokesman Remi Durlot told B92.

“We need to explain to them why we consider Kosovo a ‘sui generis’ case, and why Ahtisaari’s proposal will not be used as precedent in the future,” Durlot said.

He added Ahtisaari had no plans to visit Moscow as part of his tour.

“However, we are using other channels to communicate with Russia,” Durlot specified.

Durlot confirmed Ahtisaari’s deputy Albert Rohan submitted two documents to the UN last week, one being the status proposal earlier presented to Belgrade and Priština, while the other constituted the UN special envoy’s report, “not yet available to the public”.

Agencies speculated the latter contained explicit recommendations to award Kosovo internationally supervised independence.

Durlot rejected any possibility of renewed talks between the two sides, advocated this weekend by top Russian foreign policy officials.

“The two sides have no common ground – they are as far removed today as they had been at the start of the negotiations,” Durlot said.

Durlot added Ahtisaari’s office hoped the UN Security Council would pass a new Kosovo resolution “by the end of June”, emphasizing any delays would “lead to instability”.
