Ivanov: Appoint new UN Kosovo envoy

"If Ahtisaari thinks his mission has been carried through to the end, he must be thanked for that," Ivanov told the session.

"This also means that the situation that has taken shape between the parties, must be discussed, and if no agreement has been forged - we understand it has not - the talks must be continued and a new special envoy should be appointed," Ivanov said.

Talks must be continued in a normal setting, "without any time pressure," he said.

Ivanov also said that no documents in the Kosovo talks say in advance what the status of this territory should be like, or set any timeframe for defining it, Interfax reports from Moscow.

A mechanism must be created that would reflect the interests of long-term stability in the Balkans, he said.

"But if attempts are made to impose a solution on one of the parties to the detriment of the other, we'll only obscure this problem. Russia will neither assume, nor share responsibility for thoughtless decisions of this sort," Ivanov said.
