EU Troika welcomes Tadić

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn assured Tadić yesterday that the EU wanted to help Serbia overcome its current internal difficulties and speed up its pace towards the European Union.

Beta reports that the EU’s help could include the resumption of the SAA talks, the introduction of a wider visa liberation regime and making the EU funds available for the support of economic and democratic reforms in Serbia.

Serbia could count on gaining the EU candidate status shortly after the EU carried out an internal restructuring of its institutions and the decision-making mechanisms by the end of 2008, the process which must precede new enlargements of the Union, Beta learns from its sources.

Today’s EU-Serbia political dialogue displayed opinions of key EU players regarding the Kosovo status settlement ahead of a closing meeting of Priština and Belgrade delegations scheduled on Friday in Vienna.

The dialogue touched on the efforts of Serbian political leaders regarding the imminent forming of the new cabinet. The EU urged for a reformist and pro-European government comprised of the parties that won the majority of the vote with its reformist and European-oriented programs. Brussels sees the Democratic Party and the Democratic Party of Serbia as a backbone of such a government.
