Justice will prevail, says Haradinaj
Haradinaj, the leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, will appear before the Tribunal on March 5 on charges of involvement in a criminal plot to murder, rape and torture Serbs and Gypsies in the province.Haradinaj was indicted in 2005 and surrendered to the UN court. He was allowed to return to Kosovo pending the start of the trial and was also permitted to take up his role of president in his political party, which is part of the province's governing coalition.
"I need to go back again, with full confidence like two years ago that justice will prevail," Haradinaj said in a statement distributed to reporters after he met with Kosovo's president and prime minister.
"I will go to tell the truth and nothing more," he said, adding that Kosovo "will become an independent state."
Haradinaj, who was a former commander of the Western-backed Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), was charged in a 37-count indictment in February 2005 with war crimes allegedly committed in 1998, several months before NATO's air campaign forced Serbian troops to withdraw from Kosovo and end a crackdown on local Albanians.
The indictment also names two deputies in the Kosovo Liberation Army, Lahi Brahimaj and Idriz Balaj. All three have pleaded not guilty and face a maximum life sentence if convicted.
Haradinaj is the highest-ranking Kosovo Albanian to be indicted by the tribunal.
