Serbian prime minister Vojislav Koštunica on last Friday blasted United Nations special envoy for Kosovo Martti Ahtisaari for reportedly proposing "supervised independence" for Serbia’s breakaway province of Kosovo, which has been under UN control since 1999.

Belgrade says it is prepared to accept a form of broad autonomy for Kosovo that stops short of independence.

The Contact Group, made up of United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Russia, has been tasked by the UN with putting forward a final status proposal for Kosovo, based on Ahtisaari’s recommendations. The proposal was originally planned for the end of 2006, but was postponed until 26 January, after parliamentary elections in Serbia on 21 January.
