Kosovo talks could continue

In the meantime, Martti Ahtisaari has not yet revealed the details of the Kosovo status plan, likely to be presented to Belgrade and Priština at the beginning of February. He has discussed the Kosovo status issue with EU foreign ministry directors behind closed doors in Dresden, Germany.

“I wish to stress that this was not a meeting on Kosovo, rather a meeting that considered the problems which Germany will face during its EU presidency in the next six months. Mr. Ahtisaari attended the meeting and submitted a brief report, without mentioning the details of his Kosovo status solution proposal at any point”, Ahtisaari’s spokesman Remi Durlot said.

Belgrade’s negotiating team coordinator Slobodan Samardžić says this announcement represents “a new moment”, and is indicative of the apparent position that the major players in the process have adopted, related to the necessity to hold additional talks after the proposal has been submitted to both sides.

“It’s possible Americans wish to use that time to reach to an agreement with the Russians and possibly the Chinese, who have made it clear they wish to see the constitutional right and the principles of the international law upheld”, Samaržić says.

Kosovo prime minister Agim Ceku would not comment the unofficial information that negotiations may resume, this time on Ahtisaari’s status proposal package, but said that the Priština team will make its position known next week.
