Former Austrian vice-consul awaits extradition

The affair of the illegal selling of visas at the Austrian consulate in Belgrade broke in 2002, when it was discovered that the diplomatic mission had issued over 400 visas based on fake written invitations by both existing and fictional Austrian companies.

Austria’s ministry of foreign affairs then started an investigation into the matter, but it was halted with a Vienna prosecution’s decision.

When the affair broke out, then Austrian consul to Belgrade Johann Rapp was transferred to Budapest, to be replaced by Stojadinović.

Three years later, in October 2005, Austria’s state prosecution started an investigation against Rapp and another official on suspicion that they illegally issued and sold at least 4,000 Austrian visas. The criminal activities were this time taking place in the Austrian diplomatic mission to Hungary.

During the latest investigation into the affair, the prosecution monitored the activities in Austria’s missions in Belgrade, Budapest, Lagos, Ankara and Kiev.
