Mladić hiding since Milošević extradition

According to the daily, Mladić’s “closest associates” numbered around 50 officers, NCOs and professional soldiers, transferred to the VJ from the Bosnian Serb Army (VRS). This unit started guarding Mladić in 1997.

Večernje Novosti writes that on June 28, 2001, the unit’s members were called to urgently gather to the Banovo Brdo district of Belgrade where Mladić lived. They found him packing his things, after which he left Belgrade with a group of his security.

In the months that followed his men took 15-day shifts guarding him.

“Mladić’s Belgrade home was secured from both sides, starting 1997. There was a small structure in front of it, with two phone lines installed, in case of emergency. It also housed the entire arsenal: rifles, hand guns, grenades. Mladić’s retreat security was taken care of by Blagoje Govedarica”, the newspaper’s source said.

The Second Municipal Prosecution office in Belgrade indicted retired NCO Govedarica for aiding Mladić in his flight. The same charges were also brought against 11 other persons.

The daily also reports that members of Mladić’s security were initially based in the Dedinje army barracks, later on in Topčider, while they were transferred to the Faculty of Physical Culture in Košutnjak during the 1999 war. They were all called to give statements regarding the so-called Mladić helpers case. They declined, stating they could not reveal official military secrets.
