Parliamentary election date set

The Constitutional Implementation Law calls for the elections to be held in the shortest amount of time possible, in between 60 and 120 days from now. Most parliamentary parties refrained from amendments, while the amendments of the G17 Plus party, insisting on the time period for elections to be shortened to 30 days, were disregarded.

Serbian President Boris Tadić announced the elections this morning at 9:30.

At a parliamentary press conference last night, G17 Plus official Miloljub Albijanić said that the consultations for the Constitutional Law were nothing more than an attempt to appease the Radical and Socialist parties.

“This was not a compromise, because a compromise calls for the kind of behavior we had when adopting the Constitution. This was nothing more than a concession made for the Serbian Radical Party and the Socialists Party of Serbia. Maybe they do not want elections. If so, then this is a unique case, because there are no oppositional parties in the world that do not want elections.” Albijanić said.

Democratic Party of Serbia official Dragan Šutanovac said that he does not know when presidential elections will be held.

“The parties that discussed the elections before the passing of the constitutional law today were afraid that announcing presidential elections can only be done once there are valid candidates who can be expected to receive a set number of votes. The problem is that only one real candidate exists in Serbia, and that is Boris Tadić. No other party has the desire or power to run with any other candidate.” Šutanovac said.
