NPA clears mines in Serbia

The area Srem, situated one and a half hours north of Belgrade, is a sleepy rural community close to the Croatian border. It is along this border, in the farmers' fields, the mines are – remnants of the war that ripped the former Yugoslavia apart.

Now optimism is returning to Srem. Apart from allowing the farmers to return, the mine clearance will make possible an effective control of the border, stop smuggling, trafficking and other criminal activities.

“This will increase confidence in the region and create a foundation for increased cooperation between governmental departments across the borders,” said Petar Mihaijlović, head of the Serbian Mine centre.

Finn Erik Thoresen sees the work as a good example of the vision of NPA: Solidarity in practice.

“In Norwegian People's Aid we cooperate and support our partner's in need. Removing land mines is something that will have both immediate and long-term effects.” Thoresen said.

Emil Jeremić, regional representative of NPA in the Balkans, spoke highly of the positive effects of the mine clearance in Srem and how it will help the local community – farmers who usually lose out in reconstructions following war and conflict.

“The positive effects of reconstruction are usually seen first and foremost in the urban areas where the main investments are made. Problems with landmines are usually in rural areas.” Jeremić said.

The border area between Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia is a priority area because of its strategically important geographical position between the three countries, its common infrastructure and very fertile soil.
