Jane’s Defence analyst: Mladić one step ahead

“The success in catching Mladić depends on the results of the Serbian elections. If Serbia falls back to nationalism, there will be no political will to arrest him, at least in the next couple of years”, Hayman said, adding that the British hunted for Gerry Adams for years and never managed to catch him, even though Northern Ireland is considerably smaller than Serbia.

“We knew where he was a week earlier, our agencies obtained such information, but they were never able to discover where he would spend the night”, Hayman said.

Hayman’s colleague Careen O’Reilly said it was hard to believe Mladić’s movements remained a mystery to all levels within the Serbian security agencies.

“I can believe that the information is not relayed to the top of the government, but I do not believe this information doesn’t exist at some level within these services. I think it will be hard to achieve anything on a political level”.

O’Reilly added disbanding those services and starting from scratch, without any of the old personnel, would be very difficult.
