Ahtisaari presents initial ideas

“The meeting has been called by Special Envoy Ahtisaari. He wished to share some of his initial ideas”, Jiang told the media.

Earlier, Ahtisaari announced that when finished, his proposed solution of the Kosovo status will be submitted to Belgrade and Priština first, in order for the parties to consider the possibility of compromise, and will later be presented to the UN Security Council.

The details of Ahtisaari’s preliminary proposal have not been made public.

The Contact Group recommended earlier that a negotiated solution of the status of the Serbian province should be reached by the end of 2006. However, speculation is rife that the final status decision might be shortly postponed due to the Serbian general election, widely expected to take place by the end of the year.

Čović: Ahtisaari unhappy with Contact Group

Former Kosovo Coordinating Center chairman Nebojša Čović told B92 that Ahtisaari is unhappy with the position taken by the Contact Group so far.

“There is great dissonance within the Group concerning the pace and dynamics of events, and Ahtisaari is unhappy as he sees himself slowed down in making good on his promise to have Kosovo status solved by the end of the year”.

Čović thinks it all comes down to Albanian side’s reactions, since their lobbyists do not wish to see Albanians make mistakes, such as engage in riots.

“They are applying strong pressure on the international community in the sense, ‘if you don’t do that, we will do this’. I believe Ahtisaari is left alone. Everyone has washed their hands off the matter and awaits his proposal, while the deadline has certainly been extended to mid-2007”, Čović said.
