Referendum could fail

Blagojević told Novi Sad daily Dnevnik that there is no rule pertaining to the election date deadline, saying that “reasonable deadline should be considered, meaning, not later than three months from now”.

“Anything longer than that would mean abandoning a normal framework, and at that point we would have to stop discussing serious and responsible political behavior, witnessing instead sheer hanging on to power”, he said.

Speaking about the chances for the referendum to succeed, Blagojević said 50 percent required turnout was not unattainable, but warned the second part of the deal – “yes” vote from over 50 percent of registered voters – will not be easy to achieve.

“In Serbia’s short multi-party history, there was never an instance of 3.3 million people voting in the same way. The government and the parties should be aware of this, and make an extra effort to motivate citizens to go out and vote for the proposed constitution”, Blagojević concluded.
