“The EPS will probably increase their prices of electricity in the next several years until they reach a realistic level. Then, with the arrival of private companies, the prices will fall and there will be more competition.” Savić said.

EPS has started to expand in the region recently. It has formed a special sector within the company for selling electricity for higher prices than the ones Serbian citizens are paying, sector director Dragan Vlaisavljević said.

“We plan on making profits by buying when the prices are low and selling when they get more expensive.” Vlaisavljević said.

Private companies are expected to enter the Serbian market in about a year and a half, but experts say that it will take longer than that.

Serbia adopted a new Energy Law two years ago, though several acts and articles within the law which could speed up the process of creating an energy market have yet to be added.
