Contact Group meets to discuss Kosovo

The UN’s Special Envoy for the Kosovo status talks, Martti Ahtisaari will also be in attendance. He will be reporting to the Contact Group officials on the progress made in the first six rounds of discussions, and what he plans on doing in the continuation of the process.

Two days from today, the Contact Group will be holding yet another meeting dedicated to Kosovo. The political directors of the Contact Group member countries’ foreign affairs ministries will be meeting in Brussels on Friday. Ahtisaari will attend this meeting as well.

The Contact Group has been involved in the Kosovo status discussions for the beginning of the process. It confirmed at the beginning of the talks that there must not be a return to the situation in Kosovo in 1999, and that Kosovo cannot be separate or join a neighbouring country.

The Contact Group also stated that the solution for the future status of Kosovo must be acceptable for the majority population in Kosovo, but must take into consideration the interests of Kosovo’s minorities as well.
