Parties begin dialogue

Democratic Party Vice President Bojan Pajtić said that agreements have been reached on almost all questions relating to the new Serbian Constitution. He said that differences do exist, however, in the question of presidential elections.

“The Democratic Party supports the direct election of the Serbian President because that position must have legitimacy which a majority of Serbian citizens who participated in the presidential elections will stand behind. G17 Plus wants the president to be elected by the parliament. We stressed that Serbia needs extraordinary parliamentary elections as a way of getting out of the difficult economic and social crisis, while G17 Plus did not wish to have this be one of the topics of the meetings, but continued to say that discussions with the EU will continue by September 30, or they will be exiting the Government.” Pajtić said.

The Vojvodina Hungarian Party held a meeting in Novi Sad with officials of the Liberal-Democratic Party and the ruling Democratic Party of Serbia. Hungarian Party Leader Jozef Kasa said that his party will be cooperating with all parties supporting a European and more-developed Serbia, and that the next meeting scheduled is with the Democratic Party. The meeting between the Vojvodina Hungarian Party and Democratic Party of Serbia officials focused on the new Constitution and the rights of Hungarians outlined within it.
Bojan Pajtić sees with cooperation between parties of the democratic bloc as a sign that extraordinary elections are nearing.

“It is obvious that the time of elections in Serbia is nearing, and its obvious that the elections will be extraordinary, that the government will not last through the four-year mandate, and so the meetings of these parties can be seen as an agreement between the democratic bloc for the future Government, and finding a way to get over the crisis in Serbia.” Pajtić said.
