British media comments Koštunica visit

Koštunica starts his visit to London today. Financial Times writes that Belgrade will once again be asked to complete its international obligations and arrest and extradite all war crimes indictees.

British officials said that Koštunica will be asked to accept the fact that Kosovo gaining independence by the end of the year is unavoidable.

British publicist and Balkans expert Tim Juda told BBC that during Koštunica’s first visit to London, he will be advised to “catch and extradite Ratko Mladic, and that other things, such as Serbia’s entrance into the Partnership for Peace, will move very quickly then.”

Juda said that Kosovo will be the most important question and warned that London is irritated by the fact that Serbian leaders have not accepted, or realised, that they will lose Kosovo, and are not preparing themselves for such an event.

“One diplomat told me that the Serbian Government is acting like a man who threw himself under a train and then blamed his circumstances on someone else.” Juda said.

He said that fear is also growing in the West of the possibility of a “nationalistically-oriented party” coming to power in Serbia. Juda said that there are “two schools of thought” as far as this is concerned.

Some believe that if Serbia elects the Radical Party into power, it will be its own concern and its own choice to move into isolation instead of towards Europe. The other side wishes to stop Serbia from making such a turn, for its own sake, and for the sake of the region, Juda said.
