Migrant acceptance: Serbia 135th out of 138 countries

The poll's participants have been asked whether it was good or bad for immigrants to live in their country, become their neighbors, or marry one of their close relatives, the daily Independent is reporting.

"Most" of the countries in the bottom ten of the list are located along the so-called Balkan route, used in the past by migrants moving from Greece toward Germany, while "nine were formerly part of the Soviet bloc" - according to the British paper's website.

These ten countries are Croatia, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Israel, Slovakia, Serbia, Hungary, Montenegro, and Macedonia.

"A majority of people, 54 percent, said immigrants living in their country was a good while, while half said an immigrant being their neighbor is a good thing, and 44 percent said an immigrant marrying a close relative is a good thing," the article said, noting that "acceptance of migrants was seen to rise with education," while "younger generations were also found to be more accepting of migrants, along with residents of urban areas."

The list is topped by Iceland, New Zealand, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Mali, Australia, Sweden, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Ireland.
