"It is now quite obvious that the Idlib chemical attack was a US provocation to justify the strike on the air base," he said, stressing that US President Donald Trump "already gave up on his promise to fight Islamic State, rather than President Bashar al Assad in Syria."

The US launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the Syrian military airfield in Ash Sha'irat near Homs late on Thursday, Sputnik reported.

US President Donald Trump said the attack was a response to the alleged chemical weapons use in Idlib which Washington blames on Damascus.

Russian President Vladimir Putin regards the strikes as aggression against a sovereign nation, his spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday, RT reported.

Putin believes that the strikes were carried out in violation of international law, and also under an invented pretext, Peskov said, adding that the Syrian army does not have chemical weapons - "this has been observed and confirmed by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, a special UN unit.”

"Putin sees the US missile strike on Syria as an attempt to distract attention from civilian casualties in Iraq. This step deals significant damage to US-Russian ties, which are already in a deplorable state,” Peskov said.
