Donald Tusk says EU's unity against Russia over Ukraine was maintained thanks to the support of the U.S. - specifically, of Barack Obama.

EU's Tusk credits U.S. for Western unity against Russia

Donald Trump's victory in the U.S. presidential elections, however, means it will be harder to maintain "such an unequivocally united position of the the West towards Russia," Tusk observed.

"But that does not mean we should give in. I tried during my first conversation with the future president to encourage a discussion about Ukraine, but he concentrated more on Brexit than on eastern issues," said Tusk.

He recalled that during the election campaign Trump had "a different approach" to Russia, NATO, and the global crises than the previous U.S. administration - but Tusk said he personally finds it "hard to imagine that this would mean, for instance, an automatic return of Russia" to the G7, i.e., G8 group, and added that he although he does not decide in this matter, he would be opposed to such an outcome.

He also stressed that there were "reasons why the Western world decided on such a tough stance towards Russia, and none of them have disappeared."

Tusk said that according to all current indications EU's anti-Russia sanctions would soon be extended for another six months - but that he was sure whether that would happen again after those six months.

"Today nobody is able to say that," said Tusk.
