Turkey has summoned the Swedish ambassador in Ankara after Sweden accused Turkey of legalizing sex with children.

Turkey furious at accusations it "allows sex with children"

Previously, his Swedish counterpart Margot Wallstrom tweeted that "Turkish decision to allow sex with children under 15 must be reversed" and that "children need more protection, not less, against violence, sex abuse."

The comment concerns last month's decision by Turkey's Constitutional Court annulling a provision punishing as sexual abuse all sexual acts involving children under the age of 15, in response to a petition brought by a lower court, AFP reported.

The lower court was "worried there was no distinction between cases of sexual acts involving a young teenager or a toddler."

"It is a scandal for a foreign minister to post such a tweet based on false news or speculation. A foreign minister should not tell lies and should not adopt an approach accusing Turkey. Yes to criticism but this is a slander, a lie," Cavusoglu said of Wallstrom's tweet, according to the French agency.

He also said that his government was "determined to fight child abuse" and that "the Justice Ministry was currently working on new rules."

AFP reported that the legal age of consent in Turkey remains 18 but that activists are worried the Constitutional Court's ruling "would open the way for unpunished child sexual abuse."
