Austrian chancellor steps down

The party was recently defeated the first round of presidential elections that saw right-wing Freedom Party leader Norbert Hofer in landslide victory, which resulted in pressure on Faymann to resign.

Reporting about the news out of Vienna on Monday, the British daily Guardian said that although the president's role is mostly ceremonial, "Hofer has threatened to make use of a right to dissolve parliament before the 2018 elections, warning other candidates in a TV debate, 'you will be surprised by what can be done(by a president)'."

The article also quoted "many commentators" as saying that "the crisis of the political establishment in Austria has much to do with the fact that the two centrist parties have governed the country in a 'grand coalition' for the past ten years."
