Russian sanctions against Turkey take effect

Russia is the main supplier of Turkey with energy, providing 55 percent of the natural gas and 30 percent of the oil it consumes.

Turkey imports 90.5 percent of all the oil and 98.5 percent of all the gas it needs.

The Russian government has also decided to suspend negotiations on the Turkish Stream pipeline that was to be used to deliver Russian gas to Turkey and from there to Europe.

Relations between Turkey and Russia deteriorated after the November 24 incident when Turkish forces shot down a Russian bomber on the border with Syria. Turkey said the plane had violated its airspace - a claim that Russia categorically denied.

Russia has since decided to introduce a series of economic sanctions against Turkey, as that country refuses to apologize for the incident during which the Su-24 pilot was killed, while his navigator was rescued by Syrian forces.
