EU: Mild criticism of Croatia, Hungary over migrants
She said that the EC is concerned over Hungary's treatment of migrants and the new laws which entail a prison sentence for illegal crossing of the state border, and added that the Commission has called on the Budapest government to produce an explanation for such a measure.Berto also recalled the Thursday message voiced by European Commissioner Johannes Hahn who said that fences and violence are not a solution, but she also noted that the EC does not have any legal authority to react to the fence Hungary put up on the border with Serbia and the one it intends to make on the border with Croatia, because protection of external boundaries is a matter that falls under the jurisdiction of member countries.
Responding to reporters' remark that the border between Hungary and Croatia would become a border between two EU members, Berto said that this is also the external boundary of the Schengen zone, a region into which Croatia has not been admitted yet.
The spokesperson said that despite the claims by Zagreb concerning migrant overflow, no requests for assistance have arrived in Brussels from Croatia for purposes of provision of accommodation to migrants.
