Austrian politician sees "NATO, not Russia" as aggressor

Russia is not the aggressor that has been expanding its military influence toward the EU during the past decades, says Heinz-Christian Strache.

In his speech during a dinner of the Society of Austrian-Russian Friendship, Strache pointed out that the sanctions also hurt Austria.

"There are estimates according to which our economy suffered damage of at least one billion euros on the annual level," he stressed, adding that the consequences are felt in trade, tourism, and agriculture.

By joining and supporting these sanctions, Austria, as he pointed out, "lost confidence in its neutrality."

The EU has a problem because many of its members are also members of NATO, and therefore are not "geostrategically independent" from NATO and U.S. interests, underlined the most influential opposition leader in Austria, whose party, according to the latest polls, has great chances of winning the next election or coming in second.

Speaking about Crimea, Strache said that it was "a difficult case" and that there was a historical justification "for the Russian annexation."

When it comes to Ukraine, Strache said that the Maidan protests were funded by intelligence services via NGOs, while the change of government was conducted unconstitutionally. The new government, he said, made it clear that they did not want the Russian minority in the east and south of the country.

He also expressed doubt as to whether Russia was to blame for the shooting down of a passenger plane over Ukraine last summer, pointing out that "top CIA circles claim with certainty that Russians did not do it."

"We do not want the conflict to expand, and we especially do not want the Third World War, which is, in my opinion, unfortunately possible, considering the conscious fanning of the flames," Strache said.

Without naming names, he said that "individuals in the U.S. government and strategists" are currently considering "even a nuclear war."

As an example of the European peace architecture, he mentioned the 1815 Holy Alliance with Russia.

"This, however, was not in the interest of England and America, and that is why it was constantly hindered as Europe was strengthening," Strache was quoted as saying.
