UN asked to join "anti-terrorist" operation in east Ukraine

Turchynov's office said that in a telephone conversation with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, he invited the world organization to join the "anti-terrorist" operation in eastern Ukraine.

Such deployment would have to be authorized by the UN Security Council, where Russia holds a veto.

Turchynov was also quoted as saying that the help of the UN in conducting "joint anti-terrorist operations" would be welcome in the east of Ukraine where in many areas pro-Russian demonstrators, some of whom were armed, occupied public buildings.

"Professionals and observers could verify the legitimacy of our actions," he added.

The statement issued in Kiev on Monday quoted Ban as saying that Ukraine "can count on the full support of the UN."

"I will do everything in my power so that the situation is settled in a peaceful manner and as quickly as possible," Ban was quoted by the same source.
