NEW YORK The UN General Assembly has approved a resolution calling for a political transition in Syria. It also strongly condemned President Bashar Assad's regime for its use of heavy weapons. UN General Assembly adopts resolution on Syria The AP said that the Arab-backed, legally non-binding resolution was adopted by 107 votes in favor, 12 against, and 59 abstentions. Support was much lower than for the 193-member world body's resolution in August 2012 denouncing Syria's crackdown on dissent. That resolution was approved by a vote of 133-12 with 31 abstentions. Russia, a close ally of Syria, urged countries to vote against, while a group of Latin American countries headed by Argentina demanded changes, which were not accepted, and were designed "to water down the resolution's support for the Syrian National Coalition, the main opposition group," said the news agency.
