BERLIN Only fragments are left from young people’s dreams. Since the politics is ignoring their needs, they need to fight for their rights, Der Spiegel has reported. The German weekly writes that Europeans are rightfully losing faith in the EU. EU losing young generation - German weekly “Europe – it was a great idea. Today, it is only misery. The crisis has shaken the citizens’ trust, studies have shown. It is shocking that people from countries such as Spain, Italy and Portugal, who euphorically celebrated the European project, are the most disappointed,” Der Spiegel points out. Another terrifying fact is that the young people were able to live the dream of the great Europe – through student exchange programs, travels without border control and finally thanks to the common currency. The introduction of euro was supposed to lead to a feeling of belonging and trust among the young generation. However, the EU does not represent hope but hopelessness. Everybody is fighting for their own survival, as many South Europeans claim. They only feel contempt for the politics, the weekly writes. Politicians from EU capitals are giving away billions for various bailout programs but they do not realize that they are losing the only valuable thing in Europe – the young generation. At least one third of people under the age of 25 are unemployed in the countries of Southern Europe. In Spain and Greece two thirds of them do not have any job. The young people have no perspective, they are unprotected, depressed and miserable, Der Spiegel writes. Should this be a position for the future of Europe we want? Alarming consequences of the crisis are already visible – crime is on the rise in Spain, Italy and Portugal. Europe is losing the entire generation and the idea of Europe with it. Because, who will continue to carry it if not these young people?,” Der Spiegel noted. Politicians who are going from one crisis to another do not have an answer to the problems, not even words of concern for the young people. Maybe it is simply because they as voters are not interesting in the time of demographic changes. If Germany and France launched a joint initiative for employment of young people, it would be commendable but it would be too late. The German government is seen as especially “cold” because it constantly insists on austerity. Everybody has contributed to the crisis in south European countries. But anger toward Berlin is justified – anyone who cannot get a job socializes with friends who are also unemployed and maybe they have lost their apartment recently and they are not in the mood for the talk of the rich Germans, Der Spiegel points out. Young people want to be taken seriously. In Italy, for example, they found a place for themselves in Beppe Grillo’s party. European politicians still do not realize the potential they are wasting. The young generation must not allow this kind of disregard. It needs to be louder. It needs to get involved. It needs to vote in elections, to “squeeze” in some political party or to establish a new one, to do something concrete for its wellbeing. It (the young generation) needs to take the matter into its own hands because no one else will, Der Spiegel concluded. (Beta/AP) B92 der Spiegel
