BRUSSELS European Parliament (EP) President Martin Schulz says EU's current institutional set-up resembles a “Frankenstein monster" due to lack of separation of powers. According to him, the main problem is the fact that a model of democratic separation of powers is not respected, EUobserver has reported. He claims that only bits and pieces of this framework have been transferred to the EU institutions, but not the separation of powers. “The result is what I call 'Frankenstein Europe',” Schultz stressed. The EP head said the Commission was the most undemocratic of all three institutions because parliamentary checks and balances were minimal and that it “only alienate people”. “There are two schools of thought in the EU commission - one that doesn't rest until it privatizes even the last local cemetery, and the other is not satisfied until we have an EU regulation for burials," Schultz quipped. He believes that a through reform that would reduce the Commission’s jurisdiction is a solution. It, however, remains to be seen whether Schulz will advocate the reforms if he wins the election for the EC head in 2014. He is tipped as one of the most serious candidates for the EC top job.
