Venezuela’s military brass publicly pledged their loyalty to Maduro after they had received news of Chavez’s death. In the meantime, military and police have been deployed to the streets. Maduro on Tuesday accused “Venezuela’s historical enemies” of causing Chavez’s cancer and stated that the U.S. military attache had been expelled on suspicion of espionage. He also accused the enemies in Venezuela and abroad, especially the U.S., of trying to “undermine democracy in Venezuela”. Maduro added that the U.S. was conspiring against the Venezuelan government. Chavez, who was the president for 14 years and a symbol of socialism in Latin America, died of severe respiratory infection on Tuesday evening, 21 months after he was diagnosed with cancer. He did not show up in public since he underwent surgery in Cuba three months ago. Chavez will be remembered for his strong and often satirical and humorous criticism of the U.S. and the Iraq war.
