GOLAN HEIGHTS The Israeli military fired a missile across the border at Syria, as a warning to that country after a Syrian missile landed on Israeli territory. Israel occupied the Golan Heights during the Six-Day War in 1967 and later annexed the territory, something the international community has never recognized. Israel fires missile at Syria from Golan Heights Israel Radio reported that soldiers had opened fire on the sector near Syrian military positions, which is the first incident of its kind since the end of the Israeli-Arab war fought in 1973. According to military sources, the Israeli artillery deliberately missed the Syrian position. The same sources added that the army used the anti-tank Tammuz missile. "Recently, a bomb hit the position of the Israeli army in the Golan, near the Israeli-Syrian border, as part of the conflict in Syria. In response, the Israeli military has sent warning missiles to the Syrian zone," the military was quoted as saying. Israel has complained to the UN peacekeepers on the Golan Heights and said that "Israel would no longer tolerate the opening of fire from Syria", and would respond more strongly if it happened again. Israel has already warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to curb attacks against the rebels near the strategic Golan Heights, which has for decades been largely peaceful. Israel, which is still officially at war with Syria, tried to stay away from the internal conflict in that country, worrying that if Assad lost power, his place would be taken "by an enemy Israel did not know." Israeli army chief of Benny Gantz warned a week ago that "Syrian business could become our business." An Israeli Army tank is seen during a recent drill on the Golan Heights (Beta/AP) Beta Tanjug
