U.S. President Barack Obama and British PM David Cameron say soldiers of the two countries will not withdraw from Afghanistan before 2014, as planned. The withdrawal will not be done earlier, despite the growing opposition to their further deployment in Afghanistan among the voters in the United States. British and U.S. troops to remain in Afghanistan Obama said after a meeting with Cameron in Washington today that as of next year, U.S. troops will have only the supporting role to the Afghan forces, before the complete withdrawal within two years. Cameron confirmed that British troops will leave before the previously announced deadline, and will stay with Americans until the end, as they had been since the start of the war in that country. "Britain is has been fighting side by side with Americans since the beginning and we still have 9,500 troops there ," said he. Obama expressed his support for this position and said he would not allow Afghanistan to, after the withdrawal of NATO troops, "once again become a place where attacks on other countries are prepared". Despite the resolute position that American troops will not withdrawn before the announced deadline, a Reuters poll shows that 61 percent of Americans are in favor of immediate return of U.S. troops. The poll and the statements of U.S. and British leaders come in the wake of a massacre of 16 Afghan civilians, women and children among them, who were murdered while sleeping in their homes by a U.S. soldier deployed in Afghanistan.
