He also stressed the importance of historical ties between two friendly countries, according to reports. Patriarch Kirill, who arrived in Damascus on Saturday, stated at the start of his visit to Syria and neighboring Lebanon that he hoped the Syrian people would overcome the crisis, and that their country would "remain a country of peoce and love", reported SANA. The Assad regime has been trying to put down a rebellion since March, during which time, according to UN reports, at least 4,000 people died. Russia recently decided against supporting tougher sanctions against Syria, fearing that the move could lead to foreign military intervention "similar the one Moscow opposed in Libya" - reported the AFP. The French news agency also said that Patriatch Kirill's spokesman said his trip to the region was "peacemaking". “I am deeply convinced that all the problems can be solved peacefully and through dialogue. The most important thing is that human blood is not spilled. History teaches us that when human blood is spilled it will be hard to solve the problem,” the patriarch was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti and Interfax news agencies.
