Mickey Mouse, “soldier of Satan”, faces fatwa
27 September 2008 | 11:21 | Source: FoNet
RIYADH -- A classic Disney cartoon character has had a fatwa issued against him by a Saudi Islamic cleric.

The fatwa means that it is permissible for Muslims to kill persons – or in this case characters – that this religious edict has been issued against.

Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid recently told a Saudi religious media network that Mickey Mouse is "a soldier of Satan that needs to be killed".

But Mickey, FoNet news agency reports today, "can breathe easy", because "numerous Islamic dignitaries have spoken against the fatwa".

"This mouse is a disgusting character. He is thoroughly corrupt. Satan himself is behind his appearance," Munajjid said, and added, according to VOA, "this mouse is obviously a solider of Satan".

The sheikh, who was at one point serving as a Saudi diplomat in Washington, explained that for children in the Arab world, these cartoon characters "have become something great and beloved", while Islam teaches that "mice are unclean".

All this has met with condemnation from a number of Islamic scholars and dignitaries, but also with derision in the West.
