A memorial march organized in Belgrade on Thursday marked the 72nd anniversary of the liberation of the Serbian capital in the Second World War.

Belgrade marks WW2 Liberation Day

The liberation operation took place October 12-20, 1944, and was carried out by the Red Army and the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia (NOVJ). 3,000 soldiers died, while 4,000 more were wounded.

The event today was attended by SUBNOR veterans, citizens, and representatives of the Belgrade city authorities.

Earlier in the day, President Tomislav Nikolic placed wreaths at the memorial dedicated to the Liberators of Belgrade, and at the Monument to the Red Army Soldier.

Two streets in New Belgrade were renamed today in the presence of the Russian ambassador after two Red Army generals: Tolbukhin and Zhdanov.

Later in the day, the Academic Ensemble of the National Guard of Russia will perform at Belgrade's Sava Center, while the National Theater will host a ceremonial gathering the same evening.

An exhibition of the weaponry used by NOVJ and Red Army soldiers will be opened this afternoon in front of the City Assembly.

A concert organized by the "Let's Not Drown Belgrade" initiative on the occasion of Liberation Day is planned for this evening in Belgrade's Republic Square.
