Free examinations in early skin cancer detection campaign

Dermoscopy is a noninvasive diagnostic technique that allows a more accurate diagnosis of the changes on the skin. The entire skin surface is examined in 10 to 15 minutes.

The examinations will be performed by dermatologists from leading dermatological institutions in Serbia, among them members of the Expert Council of the campaign, Serbia's most respected dermatologists, who have been actively supporting the project since its inception.

Thanks to well-organized campaigns for the prevention and early detection of skin cancer in developed countries, 80 percent of melanomas are detected there in an early stage - unlike in Serbia, where treatment usually begins late. Worldwide experience shows that if the disease is detected at an early stage, 90 percent of patients can be cured.

The reasons for the poor outcome in Serbia include insufficient awareness of the necessity of proper skin protection from the negative influence of solar radiation, as well as the refusal of persons with potentially dangerous changes on their skin to consult a physician in a timely manner. One of the reasons in previous years has also been the lack of dermatoscopy devices in state medical facilities.

This was the motive to launch of the campaign, that in the previous year succeeded in equipping 56 state health institutions in Serbia with 78 hand-held and five digital dermatoscopy devices. This achieved almost complete national coverage and the availability of this type of examination to patients in smaller towns in Serbia as well.
