Police trade unions end strike

After the talks, Stefanović expressed satisfaction over the fact that the police trade unions have ended their strike and added that he hopes all potential future problems would be resolved exclusively through social dialogue.

He noted that the dialogue would continue on Tuesday through the talks on a new collective contract for members of the Interior Ministry.

”I expect the talks to end by the end of October, when the new collective contract would be signed with representatives of the two representative trade unions,” the minister said.

Problems obviously exist, whether in the area of overdue expenses or uniform supplies which have not been renewed for years, Stefanović said.

“We will try to solve a part of the problem by the end of the year - new uniforms will be distributed according to the agreed plan, and we will also discuss the payment of overdue expenses,” Stefanović said.

The interior minister expressed the belief that police officers will understand the unfavourable situation in the country caused by the financial crisis, which is why all their requests cannot be met.

President of the Independent Trade Union of Police Velimir Lukić stated that the talks have set off on the right track. Speaking on behalf of all police trade unions, he expressed satisfaction over the continuation of the social dialogue.

Five police trade unions went on strike on September 26, demanding that the police officers' salaries should not be cut any further because they were reduced two months ago by RSD 4,000. The trade unions also requested that the Special Collective Contract should be extended until a new one is signed, and called for the payment of the overdue transportation expenses.

The strike was organized by the Independent Trade Union of Police, and members of the Trade Union of the Serbian Police, Independent Police Trade Union of Serbia, Trade Union of Fire-Fighters and the United Trade Union of the Police soon joined the protests.
