Belgraders welcome medal-winning Serbian athletes

A crowd of more than 20,000 people gathered in Belgrade late on Monday to welcome the Serbian basketball team which won the silver medal the World Cup in Spain.

Belgraders welcome medal-winning Serbian athletes

In keeping with the tradition of celebrating the successes of the country's athletes, the welcoming ceremony took place outside the Belgrade City Hall.

"I congratulate the shooters and the basketball team on the brilliant results. I am glad to be the first wrestler in history to be welcomed on this balcony. Hopefully we will meet here again one day. Long live Serbia," Štefanek said from the balcony of the Old Palace.

Shooter Jasna Šekarić congratulated all the athletes on their medals, while Aleksandar Đoršević, head coach of the national basketball team, was given an ovation.

The men's basketball team on Sunday lost the Mudobasket final game to the United States, while the women's shooting team (Šekaric, Arunović, Veličković) won the gold medal in the air pistol competition.

Wrestler Štefanek won the gold medal in Tashkent in the 68 kg category, claiming the first world championship medal for Serbia in seven years.
