"Government plan good, significant aid will come"

Clark and Serbia's Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlović visited buildings in Smederevska Palanka damaged in the May floods, and Clark stated she believed the plan Serbia was taking to Brussels was very good and detailed, listing all the events and needs concerning recovery, and that she hoped significant aid would come in response to that.

Clark and Mihajlović came to Smederevska Palanka so UNDP officials could see for themselves the situation in that municipality which suffered great damage in the floods.

There is already an obvious need for long-term and systemic measures to deal with the results of the catastrophic floods, Clark stressed.

A law on repairing the flood damage will be adopted in the next few days and it will be crucial for the distribution of aid and disbursement of funds for building repair, Mihajlović stated.

She and Clark also toured reconstruction of the water and sewage systems, which are funded through a UNDP project meant to improve the water supply and reduce the risk of pollution in six municipalities hit by the floods.

The completion of the project will make it possible to end daily water outages in Smederevska Palanka and establish normal water supply for more than 50,000 residents.

The UNDP project covers also the municipalities of Ub, Vladimirci, Kosjerić, Lajkovac and Šabac.
