The accolade was given "for Slyunyayev's love towards the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) and the Serbian people," Tanjug reported.

Slyunyayev received the mefal because of his help in fostering and strengthening the brotherly relations between the two nations, the church stated.

"The people of Serbia and Russia have always been very close, and not just historically. That love from the past is still present and we very much wish it improved, since we belong to the great family of Slavic nations and have felt many of the benefits of those historical relations," Irinej noted.

Slyunyayev thanked for the medal, describing it as a great responsibility and adding that the people of Serbia and Russia shared the same values.

Regardless of the difficult moments and their long and complicated histories, the two nations have preserved the purity of their faith, he pointed out.
