Military clinic VMA marks 170th anniversary

The military health care system, with the VMA as its driving force, has had a major role in establishing that trust, Nikolić said.

"It is an institution of national significance and it has been one of the most respected military hospitals in southeastern Europe for decades," Nikolić pointed out.

The VMA has acquired its reputation also through rich international cooperation and participation of its medical teams in UN and EU multinational operations, Nikolić said.

Cherishing the tradition is not sufficient, Nikolić said, adding that military medical professionals are setting the highest standards in treatment, preventive medicine, education, science and research.

The head of the VMA Brig. Gen. Marijan Novaković announced that the anniversary will be marked in each month of this year.

The VMA celebrates its day on March 2 to commemorate the day when, by a decree of Prince Aleksandar Karađorević, the first central military hospital was established in 1844.

The VMA is a leading institution in medical treatment, preventive medicine, pharmacy, education and science and research in Serbia and southeastern Europe.

In addition to 27 hospitals and 17 institutes, the VMA includes the Specialist Outpatient Clinic, the Poison Control Center the Emergency Department and the Solid Organ Transplantation Center, which perform more than 5000 different diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
