Gale-force winds and snowdrifts several meters in height wreaked havoc, closing roads and trapping people inside their cars, buses, and trains over the weekend.

Around 100 passengers were evacuated on Saturday morning from two international trains that were cut off by deep snowdrifts near Vrbas, northeastern Serbia.

The rescue operation was carried out by the Serbian Gendarmerie.

Gendarmes, other police, and Serbian Army soldiers also evacuated over 700 people along the E-75 highway near Feketic, northern Serbia, 140 of them by helicopters.

The roads that remain closed as of Monday morning are: Stajićevo-Čenta, Srbobran-Sirig, border crossing Bačalmaš-Bajmok, Bačka Topola-Tornjoš, Savino Selo-Kula, Bačka Topla-Lipar and Kljajićevo-Gornja Rogatica-Bački Sokolac; Vrbas-Feketić, Novi Bečej-Bašaid, Kovačica-Uzdin, Baranda-Opovo, Zimonjić-Velebit, Čantavir -Tornjoš and Samoš-Dobrica.

Monday is sunny in most parts of the country, with moderatestrength winds, while in the province of Vojvodina, and especially in the Banat area, the southeasterly wind still has gale force.

Passengers and vehicles today wait up to 30 minutes on all border crossings.
