71 years since Nikola Tesla's death

Tuesday marked the 71st anniversary since the death of Nikola Tesla, one of the most important inventors of the 20th century.

BELGRADE Tuesday marked the 71st anniversary since the death of Nikola Tesla, one of the most important inventors of the 20th century. The Serbian-American engineer, scientists and inventor made most of his inventions in the U.S. and he held the U.S. citizenship for nearly 60 years. He died in New York on January 7, 1943, in the midst of World War II. 71 years since Nikola Tesla's death The news made it to world headlines two days later when his body was discovered in the hotel room he lived. The urn containing Tesla's ashes was buried at the New York cemetery first and was later transferred to Belgrade in 1951, and it has been kept since in the Nikola Tesla Museum. The International Airport in Belgrade was named after Tesla, as well as the Institute of Electrical Engineering in Belgrade founded in 1936. Tesla's name was also given to a high school of engineering, University Library in Nis and two thermal power plants in Serbia. Monuments honoring Tesla stand in front of the building of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in downtown Belgrade and at the Nikola Tesla Airport. A Nikola Tesla bust was unveiled in Manhattan, New York, in front of the Saint Sava Cathedral, in 2007. In late October 2013, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic unveiled the statue of Tesla in front of the Shoreham laboratory in New York. Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856 in the village of Smiljane, in Lika which at the time belonged to the military borderlands, Vojna Krajina within Austria's borders (now Croatia). Tesla was born to the family of father Milutin Tesla, a priest of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the then Metropolitanate of Sremski Karlovci, and mother Georgina (maiden name Mandic) of another clerical family. Tesla began his education in his birthplace Smiljane and continued his schooling in Gospic. He attended studies in Graz and Prague but he never graduated. Before moving to the U.S., Tesla worked in Maribor, Pest, Strasbourg and Paris. Tesla departed from Europe in 1884 and in 1885 he set up Tesla company in New York where he began manufacturing the first models of AC adapters, which turned out to be an innovation which changed the world.
